The game of bingo according to the most trusted sources of the history of bingo, derives from the game called lotto, played in Italy approximately 500 years ago. The game of Lotto was a kind of National lottery and was gambled in Italy every week since then.
By the end of the XVIII century according to the history of bingo, the game spread to France and was called "Le Lotto". It was mainly played by wealthy men, and by the 1800's the Germans adopted the game in schools as a tool for improving counting and mathematics skills of their children. In the early 1900's the game came to the USA and started to resemble the Bingo the way we know it today.
The name of the game Bingo came from the word Beano. Beano was the game played at carnivals and fests and thanks to Edwin Lowe was the one who saw it and brought to the USA. The game was very popular and seemed a lot like the Bingo, except players used beans to cover the called numbers, hence the name Beano. According to the history of Bingo, the game received its name when one of the players got tongue tied and instead of Beano she shouted out "Bingo".
The game in the US remains a lot the same, however with the exception of some special features like the cards and the patterns.
The UK variant of the game is a bit different, the cards have 3 rows and 9 columns etc.
